The Rise of Isekai: Escapism at Its Greatest

(Spoilers for the setup for My Next Life as A Villainess)

The other day I was looking for a new anime and stumbled across a series called My Next Life as A Villainess: All Paths Lead to Doom. The show follows a girl who dies and is reborn into her favorite otome game as the main villainess who suffers a terrible fate in all her endings.

If this setup sounds familiar, it’s because it’s all over the anime/manga scene right now, and it’s an isekai.

Sadao Kujo: Not So Bad A Dad

(Minor spoilers from JJBA Parts 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6.)

Oh, would you look at that? Another JJBA post.

I didn’t mean for this to be an anime blog, but let’s be honest, we knew where this was going when I dropped the shipping post. Moving on!

Why do so many Jojos have sucky fathers? George played favorites with Dio, Joseph was a deadbeat for Josuke’s first 16 years, and don’t get me started on the parents in part 5. Even Jotaro’s father, Sadao was bad because… wait what did Sadao do that labeled him a terrible father/husband.

If you go to Reddit, Tumblr, and AO3, it won’t be hard to find someone saying that Sadao abandoned his family. I’ve seen people write that Jotaro resents Sadao and that Holy should divorce him.

However, no one in canon has ever said anything like that. Sure, Joseph isn’t a fan of Sadao, but he explains that this was because Holy lives so far away in Japan.

Here’s what we know about Sadao:

  • He’s a famous jazz musician.
  • He goes on tour and is likely on tour during Stardust Crusaders.
  • He never makes an appearance in the series even when his wife is on her deathbed.

That last one seems to be what fans point to when they say he sucks. His wife might die and he is nowhere to be seen, but I have in story evidence for why he didn’t show.

An Unofficial If I Could Rewrite: A Runaway Character

(Spoilers for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure parts 3, 4, and 6.)

When watching Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, a couple of things stuck out to me as weird. And I don’t mean in the standard JoJo’s way either. The narrative flow is what seemed a bit off to me.

Avdol’s double death was odd, the focus on Polnareff over Jotaro seemed out of place, and in all honesty, some people’s Stand changed abilities partway through the story. (I’m looking at you, Hermit Purple.) But for me, the most bizarre in about Stardust Crusaders is Anne, The Runaway Girl, who leaves, returns, and leaves again.

I believe it is likely that this part of Jojo’s had its beginning and ending planned, but the middle was whatever Araki came up with along the way. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it led to the weirdness I mentioned earlier. Araki probably just wanted to use her and couldn’t think of a way to make her relevant, so he wrote her out.

In this post, I want to throw out a couple of ideas for how Anne could have been vital to Stardust Crusaders instead of a bizarre footnote. (I promise I’ll stop using this pun.)

All Adaptions Have Agendas

Disclaimer: Honestly, this one has been sitting in the drafts for a minute because of how shipping heavy it is. This post is centered around specific pairings from Bleach. I don’t care if you support Ichihime or Ichiruki. This post isn’t trying to say that one is better than the other, but it does point out in a semi-negative light how Ichiruki gained traction in the anime. I don’t hate Rukia, and I genuinely can see the appeal of the ship, but if you’re sensitive to people criticizing the ship in any way, I suggest moving on.

Also, spoilers for the manga ending!

Ichigo Kurosaki and The Squad

So forever ago I wrote a post where I talked about shipping and threw in a line about how Rukia from Bleach was only the secondary lead for the first couple of arcs. I even promised to come back to that topic at a later date. Well, it’s been 2 years (My, how the time flies!) and with news that the Bleach anime is coming back what better time to talk about it than now.

Blood+ Update

Originally, I was going to do the plot section of this series based off of my 5+ year old memory of the Blood+ anime. However, the more I wrote and visited the wiki to refresh my memory, the more I realize that I actually remember a lot of what went on in the anime. I remembered major things like character personality and major plot points but little things like how Kai and Riku reunited with Saya escapes me.

So, the last part of the Blood+ series is going on hiatus until I can find and re-watch the series. (And no piracy because of something-something support the official release.) The only reason I’m doing this post is because I noticed that people were actually reading these posts and I didn’t want to stop a series so close to the end without giving them a heads up. Well, there’s that weight off my shoulders. Bye!

Comparing And Contrasting: Blood+: Diva

Finally time for the Blue Queen!

When analyzing this character, it is important to remember that Diva was not born a monster, she was made into one. When Joel started his experiment, he decided one twin would be to seem human as a social experiment, while the other twin would used for as a much more violent experiments. It was just chance that Diva ended up in chains and Saya in corsets.

Neither series forgets this fact, and each shows parallels between the sisters behavior to emphasize this. In the Anime, Diva’s energetic personality has lulls of calm that matches Saya’s demeanor. Meanwhile, Manga-Diva’s personality is very close to Saya’s before she regained her memories.

The experiments broke Diva, but how the pieces fell changes for each series. Let’s start by looking at the manga. (She’s my favorite).

Comparing And Contrasting: Blood+: Chevalier

Where would a Queen be with out her royal guard. While Diva liked a large group of boy toys to entertain her, Saya preferred a much smaller posse. Throughout the different stages of the story, these knight fill the roles of protector, lover, brother, father, and even enemy. Personally I feel that the manga gave the chevalier more unique and distinct personalities verse the anime’s more archetypical personalities.

Comparing And Contrasting: Blood+: Saya

What better way to start examining characters than to begin with our main character herself. Now the thing about Saya is, in both the anime and manga, she’s three different characters throughout the story: the Saya with amnesia, the Saya in the 1800’s, and the Saya that remembers her past. So for simplicity sake, let’s break this down into sections.
