People Should Stop Streaming Cozy Games

Or, to be more precise, they should stop streaming the whole game. Let me explain.

A lot of times, I would find a cozy/atmospheric game through a Let’s player. They would display a relaxing game, get absorbed by its cuteness, and play it nonstop. I would watch all of their content and fall in love with the game as well. While watching, I would learn from the streamer’s mistakes and figure out the perfect way to play the game.

Now, this all sounds great at first. The Let’s player gets views, I learned some gameplay strategies, and the company gets another sale. However, problems arise when I get around to playing these games. Everything feels a little less cozy. All the cute story moments, touching dialogue, and endearing characters were already experienced through someone else’s game. My experience felt less personal because of that. This also causes me to be far less likely to watch a streamer play a game I want or buy a game I’ve seen on stream first.

I mentioned in a past post that I sometimes feel like I’m wasting time when I re-watch an old show. Well, the same problem arises when I play games where I know the story. It wouldn’t take long for me to get bored with the game and stop playing. After that, I become less likely to buy games I see others playing because of this.

The main appeal of cozy games is the experience and the atmosphere. While you can’t really take away the atmosphere, a Let’s play does alter the experience for prospective players. Most cozy games aren’t skill-based or have that many branching paths. They’re straight runs of the story from start to finish. Even when the devs think to put extra content like Easter eggs and optional quests, informed views will push the Let’s player in their direction, so nothing is missed.

Interestingly enough, I’ve never had these problems with story-driven action games like Kingdom Hearts or No More Hero. I believe it was because those games are driven by skill-based gameplay that the story was hidden behind.

There are a couple of solutions. One is to only stream games like this as a preview for the viewers. Give them a taste of the game, why you love it so much, and then stop. Most of my game recs come from TikTok where they can’t show the whole game without creating a massive series of videos.

While this isn’t a cozy game, I was introduced to Nier: Automata in a way that wouldn’t spoil the plot. Kirran from TFS Gaming showed off the game during a stream while talking about how much he loved it. I believe they played a couple of games that stream, but that was my first and only taste for the Nier series. Eventually, they did play the whole game on their channel, but I never watched it. Other than knowing what the gameplay looked like, I went into Nier: Automata fully blind and had a great time.

That being said, I’m perfectly willing to watch a stream of games I’ve already. Maybe this is more of a lesson of restraint on the viewer’s behalf.

In the past, I only watched gaming content for titles I never planned on playing or had the means to play, but that has changed. Now, I just watch whatever my favorite content creators play as a way to support them. This shift led to me watching series I would have skipped before.

So, new idea! Viewers should stop watching cozy game streams of games they are planning to play.

Well, until next time. See ya!

Re: Animal Crossing: Hollow Façades 358/2 ReMix

(I already published a version of this, but I wrote it while I had writer’s block, so I wasn’t satisfied with it. I like this updated version of the post way better.)

During the pandemic, lots of people discovered Animal Crossing for the first time. As a long-time fan of the franchise, I loved the idea of playing the games.

I didn’t play New Horizons when it came out simply because I didn’t have a Nintendo Switch at the time. I was really on the fence about getting one, but the Animal Crossing Switch was cute enough to sway me. I was lucky enough to get one when they restocked, and the first game I bought was Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t take long for me to lose interest in this game. So how did New Horizons fail to capture me like past iterations of Animal Crossing?

Sadao Kujo: Not So Bad A Dad

(Minor spoilers from JJBA Parts 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6.)

Oh, would you look at that? Another JJBA post.

I didn’t mean for this to be an anime blog, but let’s be honest, we knew where this was going when I dropped the shipping post. Moving on!

Why do so many Jojos have sucky fathers? George played favorites with Dio, Joseph was a deadbeat for Josuke’s first 16 years, and don’t get me started on the parents in part 5. Even Jotaro’s father, Sadao was bad because… wait what did Sadao do that labeled him a terrible father/husband.

If you go to Reddit, Tumblr, and AO3, it won’t be hard to find someone saying that Sadao abandoned his family. I’ve seen people write that Jotaro resents Sadao and that Holy should divorce him.

However, no one in canon has ever said anything like that. Sure, Joseph isn’t a fan of Sadao, but he explains that this was because Holy lives so far away in Japan.

Here’s what we know about Sadao:

  • He’s a famous jazz musician.
  • He goes on tour and is likely on tour during Stardust Crusaders.
  • He never makes an appearance in the series even when his wife is on her deathbed.

That last one seems to be what fans point to when they say he sucks. His wife might die and he is nowhere to be seen, but I have in story evidence for why he didn’t show.

The Reason Fate: The Winx Saga Struggles

Spoilers for the early seasons of Winx Club and all of Fate (or just the first season if they get renewed).

To be honest, I did not want to watch this show. It was an edgy remake of a beloved 2000s childhood cartoon. I didn’t expect that it to be good, but a coworker convinced me to give it a try. I only listened because she gave me this piece of advice on how to approach the show.

Don’t look at it like a remake. Look at it like it’s loosely inspired by Winx Club.

A cool chick I work with!

This is great advice to approach any remake with, honestly. Nostalgia can be enlightening in some ways, but in others, it is a hindrance. Luckily, this wouldn’t be much of a problem for me with Fate.

I can barely remember the original Winx Club. I remember little things like Bloom being a long-lost princess, that the three villain witches went to a different school, and the fact that the boys went to a third school. I also remember the style and the flair of the original costumes and how diverse the original cast was.

…And that’s about it.

So, I went in with fresh eyes and an open mind.

An Unofficial If I Could Rewrite: A Runaway Character

(Spoilers for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure parts 3, 4, and 6.)

When watching Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, a couple of things stuck out to me as weird. And I don’t mean in the standard JoJo’s way either. The narrative flow is what seemed a bit off to me.

Avdol’s double death was odd, the focus on Polnareff over Jotaro seemed out of place, and in all honesty, some people’s Stand changed abilities partway through the story. (I’m looking at you, Hermit Purple.) But for me, the most bizarre in about Stardust Crusaders is Anne, The Runaway Girl, who leaves, returns, and leaves again.

I believe it is likely that this part of Jojo’s had its beginning and ending planned, but the middle was whatever Araki came up with along the way. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it led to the weirdness I mentioned earlier. Araki probably just wanted to use her and couldn’t think of a way to make her relevant, so he wrote her out.

In this post, I want to throw out a couple of ideas for how Anne could have been vital to Stardust Crusaders instead of a bizarre footnote. (I promise I’ll stop using this pun.)

If I Could Rewrite: Harry Potter

New series alert!🎉

It’s hard to write. No one is discounting that. Editing an existing work, however, is a much less daunting task. It’s so easy, in fact, that I do it all the time without thinking about it, so I decided to start a series where I actually put some effort into it. If I could rewrite Harry Potter, this is what I would do.

To start off, my actual plan for this was to do a deep dive into each arc of the series, but with 7 books to the series, ain’t nobody got time for that. Soooo, instead, I’m just going to change my main grievance with the Harry Potter series.

All Adaptions Have Agendas

Disclaimer: Honestly, this one has been sitting in the drafts for a minute because of how shipping heavy it is. This post is centered around specific pairings from Bleach. I don’t care if you support Ichihime or Ichiruki. This post isn’t trying to say that one is better than the other, but it does point out in a semi-negative light how Ichiruki gained traction in the anime. I don’t hate Rukia, and I genuinely can see the appeal of the ship, but if you’re sensitive to people criticizing the ship in any way, I suggest moving on.

Also, spoilers for the manga ending!

Overindulgence on Nostalgia

Recently, whenever I turned on Netflix, I’ve felt this strange anxiety. I suddenly become hyper-aware of how much free time I have and how much of it whatever show/movie I pick will take up.

I think it’s because I don’t want to be disappointed and feel like I wasted my time. So, I just don’t bother trying new things. Even if I hear that something is good, I tend to avoid it because I have a habit of disliking super popular things.

Instead of watching a new show, I just turn on Netflix and re-watch an old favorite of mine. Cause I already like series x than at least I know I’ll have a good time. The problem is this has changed recently.

Nowadays, I opened Netflix, avoid the new content, click on a show that I have watched more times than I’m proud to admit, and then I will just turn it off after a couple minutes. And this isn’t just a problem with shows either. Any content that I am revisiting is starting to grow stale to me.

I stopped enjoying the comfort of wrapping myself up old content. Now, it feels like my life is slowly wasting away every time I turn on one of my favs. I feel stagnant. Every time I take a walk down memory lane with one of these shows, I realize just how much I haven’t accomplished.

It’s not like I haven’t achieved things, but anything that I failed to do since my last viewing comes to the forefront of my mind.

I have found that a good way to get over this problem though. When I share old content with my friends and family, those thoughts don’t surface.

I watched Boys Over Flowers years ago but it felt brand new watching it with my mother, I started rewatching Game of Thrones with my best friend, and playing through the Danganronpa series has been so enjoyable with my sister trying to guess the mysteries.

After I finish with these things, I think I’m going to avoid revisiting old content for a while. I’m already pushing myself to watch new things like Umbrella Acadamy, which I watched for the first time. (I loved it.) As they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder, so maybe after a much-needed break, the nostalgia won’t feel like its strangling me.
